Description
A family of shrubs and small trees, most of the temperate zones, but also of tropical mountains (Caprifoliaceae 1).
The leaves are opposite, simple or compound, sometimes with stipules. The inflorescence is cymose. The flower has 4 or 5 sepals and petals, 4 or 5 stamens and an inferior ovary. The fruit is usually a berry.
There are 18 genera.

Use
The berries of Sambucus are used to make jam and elderberry wine.
