Coca family
Description
A family of tropical and subtropical shrubs and trees centred in South America (Erythroxylaceae 1).
The leaves are simple and alternate, often elliptic or oval. The small flowers are borne in terminal or axillary inflorescences. Each flower with 5 petals and sepals, 10 stamens in two whorls, and a superior ovary. The fruit is a drupe (Erythroxylaceae 2). There are 4 genera.
Use
The Genus Erythroxylum is the source of cocaine.
