Mahogany family
Description
A family of shrubs and trees occurring in the tropics and subtropics of both hemispheres (Meliaceae 1).
The alternate leaves are usually pinnate. The flowers are regular and mostly bisexual with 3-5 free or united sepals and petals, and 5-10 stamens usually forming a tube, and a superior ovary. The fruit is a capsule, berry or drupe.
There are about 50 species.
Use
The family yields valuable timber, some oils, and some edible fruits.
