Linden family
Description
A family of shrubs and trees, occurring mainly in the tropics, but with some temperate species (Tiliaceae 1).
The leaves are usually alternate, simple and with branched hairs. The flowers are borne in small axillary cymes. They are small, regular, with 5 sepals and petals, many stamens and a superior ovary. The fruit is a capsule, drupe or nut.
There are over 40 genera.
Use
The genus Tilia yields timber, the genus Corchorus is the source of jute.
