Tannia
Family Araceae
Xanthosoma sagittifolium, tannia (X. sagittifolium 1), resembles the taro (Colocasia esculenta) very closely, but can be distinguished by the leaf stalk being attached to the edge of the apex of a notch, making the leaf arrow-shaped (X. sagittifolium 2). The plants are also taller and the main corm makes a number of subsidiary tubers.
Distribution
Tannia was domesticated in the New World (X. sagittifolium 3), but only relatively recently it has been widely distributed throughout the tropics (X. sagittifolium 4). In the 19th century it was introduced into West Africa and Polynesia.
