Eugenia jambos (Syzygium jambos), the rose apple (E. jambos 1), is a small tree, up to 12 m high, with leathery narrow pointed leaves, dark green above; and large flowers with numerous greenish-white stamens. The rose-scented fruit is an ovoid berry, about 4-5 cm in diameter (E. jambos 2), yellow in colour, and usually with a large brown single seed (E. jambos 3).
Distribution
The rose apple is a native of the Indo-Malaysian region and is spread throughout the tropics.
Use
The rose apple is eaten fresh or, together with other fruits, made into jam, jelly or syrup. Besides its area of origin, the rose apple is also popular in the West Indies and Hawaii.
