Citrus grandis

Pomelo, pummelo or shaddock

Family Rutaceae

Citrus grandis, the pomelo, pummelo or shaddock (C. grandis 1), has the largest fruits of any Citrus species. They are globose or pear-shaped, up to 30 cm in diameter, with a very thick peel and large pulp vesicles.

Use
The pomelo is highly esteemed in the East, the best fruits being grown in Thailand. It is a native of the Malaysian region. The fruit is eaten fresh or made into marmalade. It is of little commercial importance in the temperate regions (C. grandis 2). The name shaddock is derived from a Captain Shaddock who introduced the fruit in the West Indies in the 17th century.
