Carissa grandiflora, Natal plum (C. grandiflora 1), is a large shrub with sharp thorns and opposite thick and glossy leaves. The tubular flowers are white, fragrant, up to 5 cm in diameter. The fruits are egg-shaped, 5 cm long, red in colour, with edible pulp and white latex. The ripe fruits are used for making jelly.
