Phragmites australis, reed (P. australis 1), is a tall perennial grass, cosmopolitan in distribution, with rhizomes, robust stems and large plumes of spikelets forming a nodding panicle, usually occurring in swampy or marshy conditions. The plant bears narrow leaves with ligules consisting of a ring of hairs.

Use
Reed is an economically important grass, dried reeds being used for matting, basketwork and thatching (P. australis 2).
