Mentha piperita, peppermint (M. piperita 1), is a strongly scented perennial herb with opposite simple leaves and terminal spikes with numerous pinkish flowers (M. piperita 2).

Distribution and use
Peppermint grows wild in temperate regions and is cultivated in Britain, France, Italy, Bulgaria, Morocco and the US for its peppermint oil, which is obtained by steam distillation. The oil is used in confectionery, liqueurs, and in pharmaceutical and dental preparations.
