Lavandula officinalis, lavender (Lav. officinalis 1), is a low shrub with terminal spikes of very fragrant bluish flowers.

Distribution and use
Lavender is a native of South Europe and yields lavender oil, which is used in soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, toilet articles and Eau de Cologne. Lavender as a perfume was used by the ancient Romans in their baths. It is grown extensively in southern France.
