Satureja hortensis, savory (S. hortensis 1), is a pubescent annual, 20-30 cm tall, with opposite linear-oblong leaves and pale lilac flowers arranged in axillary whorls.

Distribution and use
Savory is a native of the Mediterranean region. The plant was known to the ancient Romans, who used it for culinary purposes and to flavour vinegar. The leaves are used in sausages and are eaten with broad beans. Savory is also used in meat-products.
