Cyphomandra betacea, the tree tomato or tamarillo (C. betacea 1) (C. betacea 3), is a shrub, up to 5 m high, with large alternate and acuminate soft leaves, up to 30 cm long, and with white flowers in small terminal racemes. The egg-shaped fruits are orange, red or purple, 5-10 cm long, with a thin skin and juicy flesh (C. betacea 2).
Distribution
The tree tomato is a native of Peru and is cultivated in the Andean region and in other tropical countries at medium to high altitudes.
Use
The fruits are eaten fresh or stewed and made into jam and chutney.
